A congenital anomaly is a physiological defect, which occurs as the fetus develops in utero (World Health Organization (WHO) 2015). Antenatal screening aims to identify anomalies prior to birth; this has implications for the fetus, parents and midwives.This resource aims to provide a base of information which midwives can use to inform their learning, along with assessment questions, in order to provide a good standard of care for parents and support them with results and the choices that may arise as a result of screening.

Introduction

A congenital anomaly is a physiological defect, which occurs as the fetus develops in utero (World Health Organization (WHO) 2015). Antenatal screening aims to identify anomalies prior to birth; this has implications for the fetus, parents and midwives.

This resource aims to provide a base of information which midwives can use to inform their learning, along with assessment questions, in order to provide a good standard of care for parents and support them with results and the choices that may arise as a result of screening.
